Sometimes referred to as the 'Pink Forsythia', because of its early pink, forsythia-like flowers that appear before the leaves in early April. Flowers quickly fade to white. Grows 3 to 5' tall with an equal spread and is valued for its early, pink bloom. One of the few shrubs in bloom when we open in early April, so itís the focus of lots attention from nursery visitors. Benefits from a hard pruning after flowering. Easy in most soils, but full sun to light shade yields the best bloom. Zone 5.

ACER PALMATUM ARAKAWA , ROUGH BARKED MAPLE
Easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Grows well in sandy loams. May be grown in full sun in the northern parts of its growing range, but prefers some part afternoon shade in the southern parts (including St. Louis) of its growing range. New foliage may scorch in full sun locations in hot summers areas, particularly if soils are not kept consistently moist. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Site in locations protected from strong winds. Avoid hot and dry sites. Fertilize in spring before leaves emerge. Pruning is best kept to a minimum, but if needed should be done in late fall to mid winter. Spring or summer pruning often results in significant bleeding.

ACER PALMATUM BLOODGOOD, Bloodgood Japanese Maple

ACER PALMATUM BONFIRE
The beautiful and ubiquitous Japanese maple is a small deciduous tree native to eastern Asia. Its dwarf cultivar 'Bonfire' (a.k.a. 'Seigai' and 'Akaji Nishiki') features small, palmate (hand-shaped) leaves that emerge bright red in spring, darken to bronze in late spring, mature to green in summmer, and finally turn brilliant orange and red in fall. The trunk is often twisted and its gray bark is attractive throughout the year. Branches are short and branchlets are softly drooping. For most effective growth this maple prefers a semi-moist acidic soil and part shade. It works well as a feature plant for the garden, in containers, and for bonsai.
